Prevent your bicycle from being stolen!

It’s summer and the cycling season is in full swing. With the summer the bike theft season has also open. Just like with other valuables, do not leave your bicycle unattended.

Don’t make it easy for the thief! If you leave your bicycle unlocked in the street or around the corner, it’s very easy for the thief to grab it and run off. If you need to leave your bicycle in the street then fasten it onto a solid object, which cannot be easily broken, lifted or removed. The safest option is to lock your bike in a place with video surveillance.

Avoid locking your bicycle in the same place every day as this way you help the thief plan ahead. Choose a bicycle lock that leaves as little space as possible between the bike and the lock: this makes it difficult to cut the cable.

Thin and low-quality locks are not secure. Locks with a thin steel cable can be easily cut through. The more effort the thief has to go through, the less likely they are going to take any action. The thief wants to be quick in order not to risk getting caught. Strong and high-quality bicycle locks are secure because lock-picking and breaking them is difficult and time consuming.

People often think that it is enough to keep your bicycle in the corridor but most bikes are stolen from the apartment stairwells and corridors. Please remember that the apartment building is accessible for strangers as well. You never know when someone with bad intentions gets into your stairwell. And if your bike is standing their unlocked, it’s an easy catch for thieves. Lock your bicycle also in the stairwell!
